indulging in new experiences through food

Serious question here, how am I supposed to stay in shape when there is so much delicious food offered in the cafeteria? Like seriously, every day there is a three-course meal available. The colket center is a buffet with options for everyone. There is always a salad bar, pizza bar, and a sandwich bar. Also, there is a daily special which is usually chicken or hamburgers, and there are usually french fries. So healthy right? Not to mention they have a huge dessert buffet. There are warm and gooey chocolate cookies and moist brownies, and sometimes if we’re lucky we get cheesecake! While writing this I feel like an extremely overweight person obsessed with food. It’s not my fault the food is so good here! I’m so happy I am playing a sport or else I would get so fat from all the food. Not to mention I have no self-control when it comes to dessert. I have tried to limit myself to one dessert, and I try to make healthy choices like salads and pasta. It’s definitely not easy when there is so much food available to you.  There is no one telling you to eat healthy or telling you how much to eat. I can definitely see the meaning behind “the freshman fifteen”.  Eating three meals in the cafeteria is something that I am most definitely not used to. I don’t think through out my whole thirteen years of education I have eaten more than five meals from the cafeteria. I always packed my lunch. I’m not used to having so many options. I am a person of repetition. I eat the same meal everyday for lunch and I like that. Eating here is so different, and I’m not sure if I like it yet. It’s definitely something I will have to get used to.

  1. I feel your pain, i had one of those cookies and they were on point. On top of that food my mom keeps sending me cookies and stuff to. I need fall workouts to begin so i dont feel as bad about myself.

  2. Yah! Same here....I have never had an experience with so many choices in dinning hall. I also have repetitive pattern of eating..but here food is different for me and salad is new to me, so I end up eating pizza all time, that unhealthy food! You are lucky that you are an athlete. I gained lot of weight especially fat in just two weeks.

  3. This is a great post! The best part, I think, is where you're describing the dessert bar. You just give so much detail that I sort of almost kind of started drooling . . .

  4. I have the same problem here too! I unfortunately am not playing a sport so I'll probably end up getting the freshman 15. I also liked how you described the desert bar..it made me hungry and want to go to the commons.

  5. "Warm and gooey chocolate cookies and moist brownies," now I'm starving. Being a commuter student, I haven't had to worry about falling victim to all of that food. But, after my few days getting 8 plate meals at orientation, I'm thinking it's probably a good thing I didn't get a meal plan. I ate so much during those 4 days. Good descriptions with those desserts. I feel like I can really relate even though I'm not staying on campus. I'm not at home anymore or having regulated meals at high school, so I've had to work on my self control as well.

  6. I totally agree! I wish I could just stay in there the whole time and just eat. You described those desserts perfectly. Thank goodness we both play a sport because if not we would definitely be getting the freshman 15.

  7. i never thought i would find myself eating in the commons as much as i do. All of my friends from home complain about how bad their cafeteria food is. Im not a big dessert person but everyone raves about the cookies so i might have to have one tomorrow.
